2023 Independence day celebrations: commerce in Mérida adopts tricolor theme

Flags, guitars, flutes, trumpets, hair accessories, dresses in green, white, and red colors, as well as shirts to dress as mariachis and countless patriotic items are already being sold at different points in Mérida, especially in the city center.

During a tour, it was evident that commerce is adopting a tricolor theme, as many items featuring the colors of the flag are being offered to celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day on September 16th.

Outside stores and shopping malls, street vendors began displaying musical and decorative products that were stored since the Covid pandemic, according to an interviewee who avoided giving his name because “bosses prohibit it.”

He mentioned that most of the stalls are run by people from Chiapas, who stored their products due to the pandemic and now are seeing more interest from people eager to celebrate, which bodes well for sales.

“People have a pent-up desire to celebrate as a result of the confinement we were in,” he said.

He clarified that sales are currently low, but in the coming dates, especially on September 14th and 15th, they expect sales to skyrocket.

Another vendor, also from Chiapas, shared that items such as trumpets, horns, and clothing tend to sell well as September 16th approaches.

However, she expects better sales of items for children, like toy guns, skirts, headbands, and colored braids due to school festivals.

As for prices, they vary depending on the items. For example, there are drums that sell for $80, $60, or $40, depending on the size.

Pinwheels are priced at $35, small flags at $15, medium flags at $35, and large flags range from $100 to $300. Flutes are sold for $15 to $35. Regarding clothing and hats, the price varies greatly depending on the area of purchase.
