Fishing cooperatives warn that the lobster fishing season in Yucatán had an uncertain start for the entire sector, due to a significant drop in the prices of this product.
Regarding this issue, the president of the Mexican Confederation of Fishing Cooperatives (Conacoop), José Luís Carrillo Galaz, cautioned that this period, which runs from July to February, would not generate the economic impact seen in previous years when the price per kilogram of the product reached 2,000 pesos.
Within this situation, there is also uncertainty about the volume of lobster biomass, as there is a risk that it may not be sufficient, combined with the decline in demand for this product.
“There is a decrease in prices and a decrease in the consumption of gourmet products, such as lobster and octopus, and we have prices that are 50% lower compared to last year,” he explained.
“That is going to affect us greatly because, if we add this to the uncertainty about how things will be, we can predict that both the lobster and octopus seasons are very uncertain,” he said.
It was reported that if there is a decrease in catch and price, it would have a negative impact on the market and affect the livelihoods of 1,500 fishermen who would not have the profits they had in previous years.
