Sinkhole surprises Progreso residents

An unusual event occurred on Wednesday when residents of the “Canul Reyes” neighborhood discovered a sinkhole on one of the streets in this area, prompting them to notify the authorities to prevent any accidents at the site.

The incident took place specifically at the intersection of 35th Street with 96th and 94th Streets when workers from a health supplement store were preparing to open their shop but had to halt their activities upon noticing a large hole measuring more than one meter in width and of considerable depth.

What makes the situation even stranger is that no other residents had noticed the sinkhole until the workers from this location informed their neighbors, leading to several theories about the formation of the mentioned “Canul Reyes” sinkhole.

Immediately, the municipal police and traffic department arrived to place precautionary yellow tape, while the Civil Protection department came to analyze the damage, especially because it had been over a decade since a sinkhole had appeared in the residential areas of this city and port.

Some reports received indicated that a well had been installed in a nearby area in the middle of last week, and in addition, there has been ongoing work requiring drilling on the asphalt road to install a large structure that will extend from the fiscal dock.

“We are very surprised by what happened because it’s something we had never seen before. Fortunately, no one was around when the foundations collapsed, and the good thing was that there was no one passing by. They should conduct studies because we are concerned for our safety,” stated Ana Mezquita, an elderly resident of the area.
