Through programs focused on the well-being of wildlife, the City Council has carried out more than 600 sterilizations of dogs and cats in 2023.

To care for the health not only of all the people in the Municipality but also of the living beings that inhabit our city, the City Council implements free programs to promote responsible pet ownership and prevent diseases, stated Mayor Renán Barrera Concha.

On the occasion of World Dog Day, celebrated on July 21st, the Mayor reported that a canine and feline sterilization day was held, attending to more than fifty pets at the Veterinary Module located in the Chichén Itzá neighborhood.

The Mayor indicated that as of July, 600 sterilizations have been performed so far this year, surpassing the established goal for the first semester, which was 300 surgeries.

“We are very pleased to see how our citizens are increasingly taking care of their pets. This number is a record, and we hope to increase it since on Saturday, July 29th, we will close this first semester with another event in Dzununcán,” he said.

Barrera Concha recalled that, as part of the Mérida 2050 Declaration signed with the Government of the State of Yucatán, both entities currently invest 20,107,437.85 pesos in the construction of the first Public Veterinary Hospital to provide comprehensive care to wildlife.

As part of the celebration of World Dog Day and in collaboration with the State Government, through the Institute of Mobility and Territorial Urban Development, activities were also carried out at “Los Paseos” Linear Park, located in the Juan Pablo II neighborhood, such as rabies vaccinations, veterinary consultations, as well as dog training classes, walks, and dog fashion shows.

It should be noted that currently, the Municipality of Mérida also has two veterinary modules located in the Chichen Itzá Colony and Peek Park in Paseo Verde, which operate from Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 15:00 hours, providing medical consultations, rabies vaccinations (in coordination with the Ministry of Health), deworming, and treatments for a minimal cost or free of charge, depending on the service.

Finally, the City Council promotes responsible pet adoption, and for this purpose, the Municipal Center for Animal Care (CEMAA) is located on the Mérida Periphery at Km. 34. For more information, you can visit the Facebook page “Mérida Sustentable.”
