In order to strengthen values and citizen participation at an early age, it is necessary to implement public policies that allow us to engage with the girls, boys, and youth of Mérida through programs that enable them to enhance their creativity and humanity, stated Mayor Renán Barrera Concha.
In this regard, the Municipal Council, through the Municipal Comptroller Unit, implements the program “For a Mérida with Values.” On a monthly basis, this department visits primary schools in different neighborhoods and communities of the Municipality of Mérida with the aim of promoting values and citizen participation from an early age through talks and monthly activities.
As part of this program, the children’s drawing contest “Valor-Arte” (Value-Art) is held, where girls and boys express what they would do to become better individuals and how they would contribute to taking care of the city.
During the inauguration of the “Valor-Arte” exhibition, which showcases a compilation of drawings by the winners from the current administration and took place at the “Olimpo” Cultural Center, Martha Elena Gómez Nechar, head of the Municipal Comptroller Unit, representing Mayor Renán Barrera Concha, highlighted that this administration is an example of inclusive citizen participation because it involves all social and educational sectors that contribute to building a better Municipality.
During the event, which was also attended by Silvia Sarti González, director of the Municipal DIF (Integral Family Development), Gómez Nechar mentioned that the program involves giving talks to the students of each of the visited schools to strengthen values and citizen participation at an early age. They visit each classroom to establish closer connections and achieve the goal of spreading the information.
Freddy Manuel Santo Morales, director of the “Salvador Alvarado Oriente” school, representing the participating schools, recognized Mayor Renán Barrera’s concern for implementing programs aimed at children and adolescents to strengthen values and ensure they become good citizens in the future.
It is worth mentioning that in the previous administration (2018-2021), a total of 26 primary schools were visited. In the current administration, as of now, an additional 42 primary schools have been visited, reaching the goal of attending 50 schools.
