This program, the first of its kind in Latin America, aims to foster interest and passion for technology among students in public schools in Yucatán. Its goal is to develop practical and technical skills that will prepare them for future careers in this field.
Along with the legislator, Vila Dosal visited the “Rafael Moguel Gamboa” Elementary School located in the eastern part of Mérida, where they witnessed the benefits that the educational robot, Starbot, will bring to the students. The successful trial phase of Starbot has concluded, and it is expected to be implemented in schools across 12 municipalities in the state soon.
In the presence of Xóchitl Gálvez, who expressed her intention to learn from the Governor and replicate some of his successful programs in other parts of the country, Fabio Dessi, the director of StarBot, recalled that 31 fifth and sixth-grade students from this school participated in the pilot program. They acquired fundamental knowledge of programming, coding, and the use of robots, particularly in subjects like Mathematics and Geometry.
Dessi explained that Starbot is an educational modular model designed to teach these skills to elementary-level students. It can be assembled in different ways and additional components can be added to experiment and learn about various aspects of these disciplines as well as Electronics.
Starbot supports multiple programming languages and is accessible to students of different ages, enabling them to learn practical and important technical skills, foster creativity and critical thinking, and prepare for future careers in technology.
At the same school, the Governor and the senator observed a demonstration of the Bilingual Environments program, which promotes English language learning among preschool and primary school students. The program aims to provide them with better job opportunities in the future.
During the demonstration class, second-grade students showcased what they have learned through songs and riddles, demonstrating their enthusiasm for continuing to learn the language.
The senator encouraged the boys and girls to persevere with their English studies, emphasizing that it would enable them to access better employment and income sources in the future.
The program involves 865 teachers and serves 20,600 students from 188 selected preschools and primary schools in eight priority districts. Classroom teachers, physical education and art teachers voluntarily participate to create environments that lay the foundation for students to develop skills in this second language.
The strategy operates in prioritized municipalities during this initial phase, including Dzidzantún, Kanasín, the southern area of Mérida, Motul, Maxcanú, Oxkutzcab, Ticul, and Tizimín.
During his visit to the mentioned elementary school, the Governor met with parents, promising to provide school furniture, paint the pedestrian crossing, and address issues related to air conditioning and the dome.
