Huge blob on the Yucatán coast causes alarm among local fishermen

Just 15 days before the octopus fishing ban is lifted in Yucatán, fishermen from the eastern coast have alerted the presence of a strange yellow blob on the shores.

The stain was located 22 miles between the ports of El Cuyo and Holbox, with an approximate dimension of 5 to 10 kilometers.

While the nature of this stain has not been revealed, fisherman Luis Canul believes it may be a remnant of the sargassum that affected the Yucatán coast a few weeks ago. The arrival of the sargassum was even seen in Progreso. However, they are awaiting authorities to take a sample and confirm whether it is red tide. They also hope that the tropical wave will carry the stain away from the coast.

There is great concern in the sector, as the start of the octopus season is just a few days away, and fishermen have their hopes pinned on the catch of this mollusk to recover economically from the plummeting prices of grouper.

It should be noted that if it is algae or sargassum, it would not affect the fishing season. However, if the strange stain is red tide, there is fear that the octopus season will be significantly affected once again, as it happened last year when stains were observed on the eastern coast, slowly spreading to almost the entire Yucatán coastline.
