Dozens of boys and girls from different communities located within the state of Yucatán have had the opportunity to engage with wildlife, science, and technology through the outreach programs carried out by UADY (Autonomous University of Yucatán). This includes the “Divulgando Ciencia por Yucatán” (Promoting Science in Yucatán) Scientific Fair, as explained by its coordinator, Mónica Huerta Ordoñez.
How did this project come about?
This scientific fair originated as part of the celebration of Children’s Day (April 30th). However, given the response and interest from children in these types of programs, we have been developing social projects in these communities to have a greater presence and continue our outreach efforts.
What is the objective?
The main goal is to bring science closer to children in various communities in Yucatán. Additionally, this fair aims to foster scientific vocational skills and promote university social responsibility among participating students who act as science communicators.
Who is involved in this activity?
Students from the fields of Medicine, Engineering, Nutrition, and Mathematics engage in various educational activities to provide children with an enjoyable experience.
How is the activity carried out?
For two hours in each community, children participate in fun activities that allow them to learn about different topics.
What kind of dynamics take place?
Activities related to space exploration, the importance of wildlife in the environment, soil analysis, mathematics in medicine, as well as teaching stands on nutrition, chemistry experiments, programming, robotics, and drones, to name a few.
What have they achieved with this activity?
In addition to generating children’s interest in science, the social projects developed in the community address the main needs of the residents in terms of health and nutrition. Medical care and disease control, such as diabetes, are provided, and the creation of backyard gardens is promoted.
What remains after the fair?
This initiative, organized by the General Directorate of Academic Development and UADY Volunteering, aims to motivate residents of the communities to participate in outreach activities and train students in science teaching facilitation.
