Water and soil pollution affects beekeeping in Yucatan

The Federal Ministry of Environment (Semarnat) will conduct a study on water quality, soil pollution, and their impact on bees.

This study is being carried out in response to the issue of massive bee deaths reported by beekeepers in the Yucatan Peninsula.

Simultaneously, the official Mexican standard (Norma Oficial Mexicana) will be developed in collaboration between Semarnat, SADER, and Cofepris regarding the application of aerial pesticides.

According to a promotional campaign, this standard aims to regulate or control controlled fumigations without harming the population or nature, including pollinators.

It is worth noting that beekeepers in Yucatan and Campeche have expressed concern over the mass death of bees, attributing it to aerial spraying of soybean plantations.

In response to these speculations, Semarnat has decided to conduct a study before taking further action.
