Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, described the rebellion by the Wagner Group, led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, as a “stab in the back.” Prigozhin appears to have taken control of the military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don, from where operations in Ukraine would be managed.
He stated that the uprising was “a betrayal of the motherland” and that “all those who prepared the rebellion will face inevitable punishment. The armed forces and other government agencies have received the necessary orders.”
Prigozhin, on the other hand, claimed that they are patriots and that they do not want Russia to continue living “in corruption, deceit, and bureaucracy.”
The Wagner Group operates as a private military services company and is considered Putin’s private army.
