Progreso fishermen protest against machinery at work in a sea turtle nesting area

Fishermen from Chuburna confronted workers who were caught operating heavy machinery in the dunes of this community. Since the end of March, there has been an intervention in the area to prevent the entry of any type of vehicles into the nesting area that currently exists in the municipality.

Around two o’clock in the afternoon, three dump trucks and an excavator crossed the boundaries marked with yellow tape, which had been placed by the turtle camp to prevent the passage of vehicles with tourists on board and to warn visitors not to bring loose dogs, at least during this season, as dogs are the main predators of turtles.

This triggered the arrival of at least thirty fishermen who confronted the workers, who were wearing blue uniforms from the public services department of the Municipal Government, but did not respond to the inquiries of the local residents.

Due to the mounting pressure at the scene, it didn’t take long for the situation to escalate, especially given the risk of a brawl erupting due to the fishermen’s frustration. They prevented the trucks, which also displayed logos of the municipality, from leaving.

The arrival of two reporters and the correspondent from this news outlet was enough for the “unwanted visitors” to flee, leaving behind all the sand they intended to take.

The on-duty officers also faced criticism, as there was no intervention with the workers and no retention of the vehicles that did not have license plates on either end to determine their origin.

The ecological police also received several criticisms as their presence in the Chuburna dunes is nearly nonexistent. In fact, during this incident, two officers arrived when the matter had already been resolved between the complainants and the police authorities.
