Mercado Libre, the largest e-commerce platform in Latin America, has inaugurated its first Distribution Center in the southeast of Mexico, located in the municipality of Umán, Yucatan.

With an area of 35,000 square meters, this center will be key to expediting deliveries and strengthening the brand’s presence in the region.

The Distribution Center in Umán has the capacity to store 2 million products and currently employs 250 collaborators, with a projection to reach up to a thousand workers.

It is expected that this center will dispatch more than 1 million shipments per month, using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to optimize package handling processes in cities such as Ciudad and Playa del Carmen, Chetumal, Cancun, Campeche, Merida, and Villahermosa.

The Distribution Center in Umán is part of the $1.6 billion investment that Mercado Libre Mexico has made this year, which includes the construction of a total of seven centers in the southeastern region.

This new center will also serve deliveries from more than 3,000 local sellers, promoting the digitization of micro, small, and medium-sized businesses and supporting the official store “Made in Yucatan,” which has 150 sellers offering local products on Mercado Libre.

Another highlighted aspect of this new center is its commitment to sustainability, as it will use renewable energy, implement comprehensive waste management systems to maximize their utilization, and promote sustainable logistics, including measuring emissions from delivery vehicles and incorporating electric units.

The General Director of Mercado Libre Mexico, David Geisen, expressed his satisfaction with the opening of this center, highlighting the strengthening of the brand in southern Mexico and the company’s commitment to the social and economic development of millions of inhabitants.

He celebrated the opportunity to improve the consumer experience in the region and thanked the support of the Governor of Yucatan, Mauricio Vila Dosal, for the arrival of Mercado Libre to the state.

For his part, the governor of Yucatan highlighted the importance of the arrival of companies like Mercado Libre to Yucatan, due to the job opportunities they provide to the population, their promotion of entrepreneurship, and the international projection of local small businesses.
