Insistence that Iker’s body not be sent to a mass grave

In Yucatán, organized civil society groups and the State Human Rights Commission (Codhey) will continue to insist that the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) deliver the body of the young “Chiapaneco” boy, Iker, who died in the streets of Mérida after being hit by a vehicle and abandoned at the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) facilities.

Aurora Pérez Alayón, a shopkeeper who witnessed the moment when the underage child from Chiapas was run over while begging for coins in traffic, explained that together with over 30 civil society groups, they sent a document to the FGE, urging the authorities not to send the child’s body to a mass grave and instead allow for a dignified burial with the resources provided by the groups.

Likewise, the president of Codhey, Miguel Óscar Sabido Santana, stated that they also joined this request addressed to the governor, Mauricio Vila Dosal, because Iker’s death has mobilized all the institutions involved in human trafficking and child exploitation for labor purposes.

However, he explained that according to the Attorney General’s Office, the child’s body remains at the Semefo as they continue to investigate the case of the unintentional homicide, the alleged exploitation he was a victim of, and they are also trying to locate his relatives so they can claim the body.

Iker, 7 years old, lost his life on June 13th at the intersection of Líbano Avenue and 1H Street. This location was his “workplace” where he, along with other underage relatives, spent hours begging for money from motorists waiting at the red light.
