On Friday, Shakira appeared in court for the alleged tax fraud case of 14.5 million euros against the Spanish Treasury, during which she revealed details about her relationship with Gerard Piqué.

“I was delighted with him. I remember flying from Marrakech to Croatia. We were flying over Barcelona, and I asked the pilot if we could land briefly just to give Gerard a kiss (…) I don’t know if the Tax Agency counted it as a day in Spain,” the singer said.

“I did things for love. I didn’t feel like living in Spain. It’s not the epicenter of the music industry; that’s in the United States. It’s like asking Gerard to go to Barranquilla and play for Junior out of love,” she expressed.

These explosive revelations are part of the Colombian’s defense to prove that she did not reside in Spain until 2015, despite her relationship with the former footballer starting around 2011, after meeting him at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

She explained that she established her residence in the Bahamas in 2004 but traveled extensively as she was at the peak of her career.

She said that her relationship with Piqué was turbulent. “It was like a roller coaster because our professional lives didn’t align; it was like mixing water and oil. I was a globetrotter, and he had to follow a schedule.”

Furthermore, to justify that she didn’t feel tied to Spain, she detailed that Pep Guardiola, the Barcelona coach, and Piqué had a very tense relationship to the point that the Catalan considered leaving the team and returning to Manchester United in England, where she would follow him.

Shakira faces a possible prison sentence of eight years and two months, and a fine of 23.8 million euros after refusing to reach an agreement with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, as she maintains her innocence.
