Three individuals suffered the effects of heat in the port of Progreso in the middle of the week, with a 20-year-old woman experiencing considerable consequences as she walked under the scorching sun with high internal temperature.
The incident occurred around 2 p.m. when the young A.G.C.P., only 20 years old, fell on the slope of 25th Street between 78th and 80th streets in the “heart of downtown Progreso.” Workers from a nearby supermarket and parking attendants rushed to provide assistance.
One of the actions taken was to establish communication with one of her relatives who promptly arrived on a motorcycle. The relative stayed with her until the arrival of police and paramedics from the Red Cross.
“From a distance, I could see that something was not right with the girl. She appeared very weak and had difficulty crossing the street. She almost got run over before reaching 78th Street. When she reached the shade, she collapsed, and we rushed to help her,” confirmed Paulo Catzín, a parking attendant in the mentioned area.
Meanwhile, the employees of the local store and the motorcyclist who came to the aid of his relative placed damp cloths on the girl’s body to lower her temperature and alleviate the suffocating condition that caused her to collapse.
When the paramedics arrived, they proceeded to check her vital signs and heart rate, which remained elevated due to the nervous crisis the young woman experienced. After approximately ten minutes, the affected person was able to sit on the street and began to regain consciousness.
Although hospitalization was not necessary, she received intravenous fluids, and the attending relative was advised to ensure she gets plenty of rest. In case she feels unwell again due to high temperatures, it was recommended to seek medical attention.
Just minutes before and one block away from the aforementioned case, a homemaker also briefly lost consciousness due to the heat, leading to the arrival of rescuers who provided first aid to help her recover. The woman was identified as Heidy X.T., 44 years old.
Similar to the young woman’s case, it took only a few minutes for the homemaker to gradually regain consciousness. She was in the midst of her shopping routine in the “portals,” a crowded area among the stores due to their small size and high influx, especially from morning until one in the afternoon.
Finally, another incident occurred around 5 p.m. involving an elderly person who began to faint on the international boardwalk. The family quickly took the senior, who was over seventy years old, to a private hospital in a Nissan “Sentra” car.
Before his fainting spell, the elderly gentleman was walking without sun protection, from the traditional boardwalk to the international one. Additionally, he had been drinking only cans of beer.
On another note, attention was drawn to a dog named Lomito at the harbor in Yucalpetén, who, due to the high temperatures, decided to lie down on an ice sculpture discarded by a crew. This was an attempt to alleviate the heat in an area where shade is lacking for pets.
This incident went viral as several fishermen posted the moment on their respective social media platforms. Numerous comments from the local community emphasized the importance of caring for dogs that live at the dock.
