A fierce fire broke out on the Mérida-Cancun highway, where a trailer and a dump truck were engulfed in flames, resulting in significant material losses. Fortunately, the occupants escaped unharmed.
On Tuesday afternoon, the highway had to be urgently closed after two heavy-duty vehicles caught fire in the middle of the road. The fire, which lasted several minutes, caused anxiety among drivers desperately trying to leave the area and was the result of irresponsibility.
The incident occurred near kilometer 32 of the Mérida-Cancun highway, just a few meters from the Holactún and Seyé junction. Dozens of vehicles, trucks, and trailers had to come to a halt as both vehicles burned in flames on the road.
Police officers from Seyé, Tahmek, and Hoctún, from the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) and the National Guard (GN), arrived at the scene and took control of the situation. Firefighters and paramedics also arrived to extinguish the fire.
It was identified that the two heavy-duty vehicles involved were a double-trailer tanker truck carrying animal feed and a hopper truck, which apparently was carrying stones according to some reports. It is said that the drivers of both vehicles were racing each other, as they ended up occupying one lane of the road and lost control of the steering, resulting in the collision.
Rescue vehicles and ambulances were not necessary as both drivers and their passengers, who have not been identified, escaped unharmed. However, it appears that these individuals were detained for further investigation to determine responsibilities.
As of the time of this report, the authorities have not provided an official statement.
