According to Raúl Argáez, legal representative of Un Millón de Esperanzas A.C., cases of animal abuse in Yucatán have decreased, since at least the group he represents only knows of two cases so far this year, one in the port of Progreso and the other in Kanasín.
“Those that have come to light have been strong, such as the case of some people who sacrifice animals in Kanasín to perform satanic acts, something that the neighbors have denounced, together with the case of the foreigner who kills animals in Progreso. These are the two most notorious cases so far this year,” he mentioned.
In this sense, he indicated that the drop in cases of animal mistreatment may be due to the fact that people have created awareness or fear of social lynching because the laws that punish this type of behavior are not applied as they should be, “but I believe that people do think twice before doing something to an animal, I think that is why the cases have decreased”.
Raúl Argáez assured that tougher laws are needed to avoid more cases of mistreatment, especially so that the aggressors do not get out of jail easily, which is why he pointed out that in Mexico City a march will be held to ask for sentences of up to 12 years in prison for those who commit animal mistreatment.
“We do need harsher penalties like what happened in Querétaro, where the person who killed some rescue dogs was sentenced to 11 years and six months in prison. That is what is needed, higher penalties for terrible cases,” said the activist, who said that in Yucatán no animal aggressor has ever been sentenced to jail.
