During the second week of June, Chichen Itza will receive its one millionth visitor, revealed the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), stating that the site remains the most visited in the country.
From January to last May, archeological tourism to the 15 of the 17 sites of the entity was one million 260 thousand 674, with a decrease of 10.49 percent with respect to the same period of 2022, which totaled one million 408 thousand 361.
Nationally, the number of archaeological and museum tourism visitors was eight million 129 thousand 85, with an annual increase of 40.08 percent.
Chichen Itza alone was visited by 929,826 tourists, 19.66 percent, followed by Teotihuacan, State of Mexico, with 829,484 visitors, 17.54 percent, and Tulum, Quintana Roo, with 688,286 visitors, 14.55 percent.
These three sites alone accounted for 51.76 percent of the national total, that is, a little more than half.
Uxmal was in seventh place in the national table, Ek’Balam in ninth place; Dzibilchaltún in 21st place; Mayapán is in 28th place; Kabah, in 30th place; Izamal, 43rd; Xkambó, 44th; Aké, 53rd; Labná, 62nd; Sayil, 70th; and Oxkintok, 83rd.
Finally, after the closure of the sites as a result of Covid-19 on March 23, 2020, the Balamcanché Caves and Loltún Caves have still not been opened to tourism, that is, they have been closed for three years and two months.
