A minority group of children from Chiapas (without specifying the number) will remain under the care of the Center for the Care of Unprotected Minors (Caimede) after being held in the custody of the Yucatecan authorities following operations carried out in downtown Mérida to dismantle an alleged child trafficking network for labor exploitation.
According to the Yucatán State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), the majority of the 20 individuals were returned to their homes in Chiapas.
The authorities recalled that during the simultaneous operations carried out on the night of June 19, they safeguarded 20 individuals, including girls, boys, adolescents, and elderly adults.
These individuals were sent to a shelter located in Mérida under the supervision of the Yucatán State Human Rights Commission (Codhey) while their legal status was determined and their identities, family members, and addresses were verified for their return.
Throughout the past week, the FGE, in coordination with authorities from Chiapas, facilitated the return of the rescued individuals from this alleged trafficking network.
The minors who remained under state custody lacked any documents to prove their identity or immediate family members to claim their guardianship and custody.
It is worth noting that there is one person detained in connection with this incident, based on an arrest warrant issued in Chiapas for the crimes of illegal deprivation of liberty in the form of kidnapping, in addition to their involvement in the exploitation of minors in Mérida.
