Entrepreneurs of the tourism sector in the south of Quintana Roo insist on a modification in the name of the Chetumal International Airport, to link it with the Bacalar brand, that is to say, that the new name of the airport be Chetumal-Bacalar.

They argue that adding the name of Bacalar to the airport would have a positive impact on the attraction of tourists, since Bacalar currently registers a 96% search rate on the Internet by Europeans, while Chetumal barely reaches 4%.

According to businessmen, statistics show that there is a greater interest in Bacalar compared to Chetumal. The Seven Colors Lagoon (located in Bacalar) is better known and more attractive than the state capital (Chetumal), and associating the name of Bacalar with the air terminal would give information to visitors about the short distance between both destinations.

Josué Palomo, president of Aliarse Quintana Roo, South Zone, assures that there is a great interest in visiting Bacalar, but international tourists, when looking for information about the air connection with the destination, usually only find the Cancun airport, which is six hours away by land. This is because Chetumal is an unknown place outside Mexico.

“In a consensus that has been made with businessmen from Chetumal and Bacalar, for a marketing and connectivity issue, we proposed that renaming the air terminal as Chetumal-Bacalar International Airport, would help foreign visitors to associate the proximity between both destinations,” he said. The proposal to change the name of the airport to Chetumal-Bacalar seeks to solve the lack of knowledge of the capital of Quintana Roo and to give an economic and tourist impulse to this region. It is worth mentioning that Bacalar and Chetumal are 38 kilometers apart by land, so the distance between both destinations is very short.
