Burglary on the rise in Campeche due to lack of police vigilance

It is in the middle of the day when people are at work that thieves take the opportunity to steal water pipes, water tanks, and gas tanks, said the president of the Frente Único de Minisúper de Campeche, Marcos Canul Estrella, who added that this happens in homes and businesses where people are now installing cameras.

In an interview, he said that because their businesses operate 24 hours a day, most of them have protective bars, and access to customers is restricted, that is to say, they are attended at the entrance, which reduces the risk.

“We have not had any recent case of armed robbery, but we are not exempt from it”, he mentioned and then added that in their establishments they have installed a video surveillance system with cameras on the outside because the surveillance by the Secretariat of Protection and Citizen Security has been scarce.

The businessman even considered that the authorities have concentrated police presence in the downtown area of the city due to the Mexican Petroleum Congress, but have neglected other neighborhoods.

“Now we are seeing that as a result of the event of the oil workers, the affluence of police patrols in the popular neighborhoods has also decreased, but there has not been any unfortunate incident,” he said.

Although he clarified that so far in 2023 the mini-supermarkets have not registered robberies or assaults, house robberies have been observed in the neighborhoods where their stores are located.

“The neighbors who are close to our establishments complain about house burglaries, I am referring to water pipes, even to water tanks, gas tanks, and in some other homes where they have entered to steal during the course of the day when people are not at home because they are working,” he concluded.
