Bill Gates took a turn in his investments by acquiring a stake in Heineken, one of the largest breweries in the world. However, his goal is not simply to make profits, but to promote sustainable practices in beer production.
Gates’ venture is supported by his investment in Epic Cleantec, a startup that focuses on water reuse and conservation. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation supported this company in 2012 as part of the “Reinvent the Toilet” challenge, an initiative to develop innovative technologies in wastewater treatment.
According to El Economista, the idea being proposed is to use a portion of the recycled water from showers and toilets to brew beer. Epic Cleantec has made significant progress in this direction by producing a test beer called Epic OneWater Brew, made from wastewater.
This revolutionary process has the potential to not only transform the beer industry but also address the growing water scarcity worldwide. According to the United Nations, only 2.5% of the water available on the planet is freshwater, and the demand continues to increase due to population growth.
