Yesterday, the President of the Republic, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, arrived at the military airbase number 8 in his 13th visit of the year. As always, he sent warm greetings to his friend, the founder of this newspaper, Mr. Mario Renato Menéndez Rodríguez.

Several people approached the official vehicle in which the federal president was traveling, including the commissioner of Santa María Chi, in the eastern part of the city, Wilberth Alfonso Nahuat Puc. He handed a document to the president, explaining the situation faced by the community. Since May 12th, the community has established a camp at the entrance of the San Gerardo pig farm and has also put up publications against the mentioned pig business.

The commissioner stated that the residents are protesting against the pollution and health damage caused by the pig farm in the community. They have been protesting for a month now, with posters against the pig business displayed on every post at the commissioner’s office entrance, and they can also be seen on several houses.

It all started on May 12th when the pig farm burned its waste, causing respiratory problems in the community. The affected individuals submitted documents to the Mérida City Council for intervention, but their efforts were in vain as no one took responsibility. Nahuat Puc sought assistance from the Sustainable Development Unit of the Mérida City Council, which declined to handle the case. He also made a request to Mayor Renán Barrera Concha, who has yet to respond.

Other people who were waiting for the president greeted him and took photos with him. One attendee asked him to greet his wife, who is a follower of the president and mentioned that she watches his morning press conferences every day. He put her on the phone, and the President spoke with her.

As the vehicle carrying the federal president passed by, he had the window of his door lowered. The neighbors told him that he was a great person and the best, to which he replied, “You are,” before continuing on his way to the hotel where he spent the night.

Yesterday, the president was in Quintana Roo, where he supervised the construction of the Tren Maya (Maya Train) together with Governor Mara Ledezma. They also presented him with a project to connect the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto to access the sea.

Today, as scheduled every 15 days, the President will supervise the priority projects of the Federal Government in Yucatán. In addition to the railroad, these include the Grand La Plancha Park and the expansion of the Altura Port, in collaboration with the state governor, Mauricio Vila Dosal.
