A submarine that is typically used by OceanGate Expeditions to take tourists to see the remains of the Titanic has disappeared in the Atlantic Ocean, triggering a search and rescue mission, as confirmed by the Boston Coast Guard to the BBC on Monday. It is currently unknown if there were passengers on board and, if so, how many.
Occasionally, small submersibles transport tourists to view the remains of the Titanic on excursions that cost thousands of dollars and last for several days. The dive, which includes the descent and ascent, lasts approximately eight hours. The famous shipwreck, which continues to generate excitement among visitors to this day, is located 3,800 meters deep on the floor of the Atlantic, about 600 kilometers off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.
OceanGate Expeditions is a private company that deploys submarines for deep-sea expeditions. Recently, the company posted on its social media that one of its trips was “underway.” So far, the company has not issued any statements regarding the disappearance of one of its submarines.
