Yucatan, third place nationally in cases of ovarian tumors

The ovaries are the female reproductive organs that produce and release eggs for fertilization and pregnancy. They are small, almond-shaped organs located in the pelvis on each side of the uterus.

While their function is of paramount importance in the reproductive process, factors such as menopause and assisted pregnancy procedures can cause the formation of non-cancerous cysts and masses, which without proper care can turn into tumors and develop metastasis.

Ovarian cancer is one of the most common among the female population, only surpassed by other diseases such as cervical cancer and breast cancer, which are the most frequent affecting this group.

The disease often produces few symptoms during the early stages and progresses rapidly before starting to cause them. The first symptom is usually a mild discomfort in the lower abdomen, similar to indigestion, the appearance of fluid in the abdomen, pelvic pain, anemia, and weight loss.

During 2023, the Ministry of Health began to count the patients who arrive at public hospitals with these conditions and are diagnosed with malignant tumors in the ovaries, a figure that amounts to 455 cases nationwide.

Of this number, almost 40 percent corresponds to the state of Jalisco, whose figure amounts to 171, followed by Veracruz with 47 and Yucatan with 19 women diagnosed with this type of cancer.

In 2012, Georgina went to a medical consultation for discomfort in her lower back, which had lasted for three weeks.

A general practitioner at the IMSS in Merida attended her at the Family Medicine Unit (UMF) 59, suspecting that it was ovarian cysts. Therefore, he suggested to the 47-year-old woman (at that time) that she undergo an ultrasound to know the condition of her organs.

Three weeks later, she returned with her results in hand, confirming her doctor’s suspicion. When she was informed of what it was, she felt a concern that she had never felt in her life.
