Covid-19 remains present despite the end of the pandemic

The Yucatan Medical College, A.C called on citizens to not let their guard down against the presence of Covid-19 in the state.

Regarding this, the president of the organization, Maria Elena Gonzalez Alvarez, pointed out that after the declaration of the end of the pandemic of this disease by the World Health Organization (WHO), it only shows that the virus can now be tackled in an endemic way, which is good news for society.

“We can now control it a bit with our immunity. That hybrid immunity, our natural immunity, the vaccination which is extremely important for this achievement, and in the case of Mexico, where we have factories of AstraZeneca and the Patria vaccine, this helps us feel more at ease,” she explained.

On Friday, the WHO announced the end of the pandemic established on January 30, 2020, which had an incidence of 765 million infections and about 20 million deaths in the last three years, to become an endemic disease.

The interviewee stressed the importance of improving the healthcare system in Yucatan while highlighting the work of healthcare personnel in different hospitals in supporting infected patients, which led to up to three worker deaths per day.

She emphasized the importance of people not letting their guard down since coronavirus infections are still present.

“What follows is that we don’t believe that the virus is no longer here, that is something very important. The virus is still here. Keep ventilating your homes, keep taking care of your health, wearing a face mask, not going to crowded places, and getting vaccinated. That is very important,” she said.

She referred to the importance of continuing the vaccination process of people to continue immunization against the disease with the goal of preventing it from claiming lives in the entire state.
