Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the WHO, declared the end of the global health emergency for the Covid-19 pandemic, following the reduction of severe cases and deaths.
“With great hope, I declare the end of the Covid-19 global health emergency. It is a moment of celebration, achieved through the tireless work of millions of health workers, much innovation and research, difficult decisions made by governments, and sacrifices we have all had to make,” he expressed.
Despite this, he urged people not to let their guard down as the virus remains a threat to health.
Over the course of more than three years, there have been around 20 million deaths and nearly 765 million cases.
A national emergency was declared on January 30, 2020.
