An unusual report has emerged in Progreso, as the whereabouts of the ship ‘Gazibey’ are unknown. The ship arrived in Yucatán from Cuba with a cargo of over 30,000 tons of stone for the Tren Maya.
According to initial reports, the vessel has ‘disappeared’ as it did not dock at the remote terminal, and there are no records of its arrival in Cozumel, where it was supposedly headed. Authorities are currently searching for the ship.
The cargo on board this vessel is crucial for the construction of the railroad tracks for the Tren Maya. The stones were originally sourced from the state of Veracruz, but due to a scarcity of stone in the mines of that state, the federal government decided to import it from Cuba.
The disappearance of this vessel, which measures 141 meters in length, has raised concerns among port authorities. It is known that the ship flies the flag of Panama and reportedly has a Turkish crew.
Originally, it was supposed to arrive in Cozumel, but it was not authorized to dock there due to concerns about potential damage to the coral reefs caused by its draft. Instead, it was redirected to the port of Progreso.
It was reported that the ship anchored north of the remote terminal, waiting for a berth to unload its cargo. However, the shipping company demanded payment for the transport fee since it departed from Cuba in mid-May. In response to the refusal to pay, the ship set sail and left Progreso, heading towards the open sea. It is presumed that the cargo vessel is currently anchored in the Caribbean Sea, Holbox, or international waters, awaiting a response. It is believed that the ship’s satellite tracking system has been disconnected, making it impossible to locate.
