Recommendations to eliminate stigmas when hiring personnel in Yucatan

Stigmatizing young people with tattoos, administrative offenses, criminal records, and addictions in the workplace only leads to a perpetuation of the issues they are struggling with. Therefore, prejudices must be set aside, and abilities should be considered when hiring, emphasized Amaranda Becerra Puerto, President of the Social Crime Prevention Commission of the Municipal Security Council.

During the presentation of the first Employment and Entrepreneurship Fair promoted by the civil associations Insade and Sofia, she pointed out that recruiters often resort to discriminatory practices when hiring new employees, focusing on finding human capital that meets standards of beauty and tidiness, thereby excluding those who are in a situation of poverty or vulnerability.

“As a former recruiter, I witnessed the common practice of rejecting someone because they have tattoos or a criminal record,” she expressed regarding this phenomenon that goes against social reintegration.

Becerra Puerto emphasized that conditions of poverty and inequality lead young people to take the wrong path, such as engaging in addictions, street fights, theft, and assault.

However, the actions they take at a certain point in their lives do not define them, and on the contrary, many of them strive to overcome their challenges through rehabilitation processes, which should be taken into account when evaluating their worth.
