Motorcyclists who travel on this road in Mérida will be fined

The Ministry of Public Security (SSP) of Yucatán has started setting up checkpoints to inform motorcyclists traveling on the Mérida peripheral road that they are no longer allowed to access and travel on the vehicular bridges.

According to Article 290, drivers and passengers of motorized smaller vehicles are required to wear a protective helmet, while Article 295, Section V, prohibits the circulation of motorized smaller vehicles on overpasses.

According to the information provided, fines could range from 2,500 pesos or more, but only for motorcycle riders with engine displacements under 350cc who attempt to access the viaducts. Touring motorcycles should not have any issues.

These initial operations took place near kilometer 12, close to the 42 Sur bridge, where a speed reduction station was installed to encourage proper helmet usage and to prevent motorcycles from traveling on the bridges.

The SSP will reinforce monitoring through surveillance cameras and the deployment of patrol cars positioned beneath the bridges to stop all motorcycles with engine displacements under 350cc and their riders who do not comply with this provision.

It is explained that the first offense will result in a warning or attention call to the motorcyclist, the second offense will incur a fine, and on the third offense, the vehicle will be impounded.

Likewise, vehicles from the Ministry of Public Security will patrol the peripheral road to ensure that motorcycles only travel on the right lane, do not carry children under six years of age, and comply with all provisions of the traffic regulations.
