Merida will not provide accommodation for migrants, these will be deported immediately

Yucatan is now without space to temporarily receive undocumented individuals rescued by the National Institute of Migration (INM) in the coming days, following the suspension of the “Type A” Provisional Stay facility in Merida by the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH).

The State Representation Office of the federal agency confirmed that the facilities located on 31st Street in the Mexico neighborhood are the only ones available in Yucatan.

According to the Protocol for Immigration Inspections, when a person of foreign origin is identified in the country who cannot prove their legal stay with documents such as a temporary residence card, student card, permanent card, or multiple migratory form, they are placed under the custody of the INM in order to determine their immigration status in the country.

After identifying a person with irregular status, the administrative procedure includes their presentation to the official registry of the Institute and subsequently their accommodation in Type “A” or “B” facilities.

Being a Type “A” facility, the Merida installations, with a capacity of 26 people, only allow temporary stay for a maximum of 48 hours before beginning the process of regularization, assisted return, or deportation.

Since there is no accommodation option available, individuals rescued during the period of the CNDH review process would be transferred to other facilities in other states or immediately start the repatriation process.

However, during the temporary suspension, the INM cannot accommodate a number of individuals that exceeds the maximum capacity of other immigration facilities. They also cannot set up any property that does not meet the requirements and services specified in the Migration Law and its Regulations.
