Man saved after attempting to cut his wrists in Progreso, Yucatan

Suicide attempts once again made headlines in the port of Progreso after over a month without any such incidents. A young man, residing in the eastern part of the municipality, attempted to escape life through self-harm in the silence of the early hours of this midweek.

The “Vicente Guerrero” neighborhood gained attention again due to a police incident, involving an attempted suicide, which was fortunately thwarted by the intervention of paramedics from the SSP (State Security Police) and local police officers. They received a distress call in the early hours of Wednesday, May 10th.

The incident took place in a house located at 37th Street between 122nd and 124th, where the man used a sharp object to inflict wounds on both of his wrists in an attempt to take his own life. Authorities were alerted to detain the approximately 30-year-old individual.

The arrival of patrol cars and an ambulance from the local police department woke up the neighborhood, who lamented such an incident. It is still unknown whether the man was facing economic or emotional problems, as witnesses claim that he did not display any strange behavior in the days leading up to the incident.

Once the injured man was placed on a stretcher and taken to the emergency unit, he was transported to the “Agustín O´Horán” hospital in Mérida, where he will have to undergo rehabilitation for at least a couple of days before being discharged.

Just this past weekend, an individual who assaulted a family member and subsequently threw stones at passersby in the same neighborhood came close to being lynched. So the neighborhood is already under constant police surveillance.

It should be noted that in the area where these unfortunate incidents are taking place, robberies, and acts of violence have been on the rise, there is a high level of poverty, particularly in the streets adjacent to the marshland, making it one of the most impoverished areas in the entire municipality.
