Karate teacher arrested for sexual abuse against a student

The Ministry of Public Security (SSP) of Yucatán announced the arrest of José Antonio R.G., a karate teacher who allegedly sexually abused one of his students in Mérida.

According to the complaint filed two years ago, the 36-year-old man taught classes at the “Yugen Sport Karate” academy located in the San Esteban neighborhood, north of Mérida.

He took advantage of his position to manipulate one of his students, with whom he committed lascivious acts inside the establishment when she attended her classes.

Based on the complaint and the evidence gathered by the investigating agents and prosecutors, an arrest warrant was executed against the individual, originally from Mexico City, on Thursday afternoon. He will be presented before the requesting Control Judge.

Although no further information was provided about the operation and the place of arrest, authorities released a photograph showing José Antonio in the custody of two State Investigative Police (PEI) officers.

According to the Yucatán Penal Code, sexual abuse is considered equivalent when the aggressor takes advantage of a relationship of kinship, dependency, custody, or any other relationship that implies power or authority over the victim.

If found guilty, the karate teacher arrested in Mérida could face prison sentences ranging from six to twelve years.
