INAH explores passageway to cenote under the Convent of San Antonio de Padua in Izamal

The exploration of a cenote located beneath the Convent of San Antonio de Padua in Izamal continues, with the aim of finding a passageway to the site.

According to the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), the search is focused on the entrance of the ancient well and a passageway that is part of the convent.

These INAH works have been carried out for three consecutive weeks, and the investigations have led to the location of the cenote entrance.

Information provided reveals that this ancient cenote provided water to the monks of the Convent of San Antonio de Padua until the 20th century.

During the excavation, various archaeological pieces such as ceramics, metal, and other materials have been found and are being analyzed.

It is unknown how long INAH’s work in Izamal will continue until more details are uncovered about the cenote located beneath the Convent of San Antonio de Padua.
