Forest fires have consumed more than 4,500 hectares in the Yucatán Peninsula so far this year

The beginning of spring and the heat waves that have been recorded during the last few weeks in the Yucatan Peninsula have favored the creation of forest fires, which have destroyed 4,552 hectares of jungle.

According to the Weekly Report of the National Forestry Commission (Conafor), more than 150,000 hectares of trees, shrubs, herbs, and leaf litter have been affected by fire throughout the country, of which 752.22 correspond to Yucatan, 603.50 to Quintana Roo, and 3,197.48 to Campeche.

Although Campeche has been the most affected federal entity by land extension, Quintana Roo is the state in the peninsula that registers the highest incidence of forest fires, with a total of 20, followed by Yucatan with 15 and Campeche with five.

During the last week, only one forest fire was reported in the Yucatan Peninsula, which took place in the state of Quintana Roo, consuming 8.03 hectares of vegetation belonging to the Yum Balam protected natural area, in Lazaro Cardenas, which is 75 percent under control and 57 percent liquidated.
