Despite the constant visits made by personnel from the Municipality of Progreso and the rumors circulating in the fishing circuit indicating a possible administration of the pier in the Chuburná community, where the attractive Swing Island is located, the fisherman and head of the Nautical Committee of that community, Daniel Pool Chan, expressed that “Chuburná belongs to the fishermen until the end.”
For the past couple of months, attention has been drawn to the frequent visits by Mayor Julián Zacarías Curi, Director of Fisheries Franklin Franco Sánchez, and Councilor of Public Services Karim Dib López. In the final days of this month, they shared galleries of photographs and promoted the site on their social media accounts.
It was revealed that benefits were granted to a couple of cooperatives that are part of this project, such as the rehabilitation of their spaces. However, not all groups of fishermen accepted assistance from the municipal administration, as is the case with Pescabyuc, whose members continue to work on their own and, to avoid risks, request anonymity in interviews with the media.
One of the veteran fishermen who agreed to speak about the autonomy, which has been confirmed to prevail at the Chuburná pier, is the elderly Daniel Pool Chan, who also indicated that the topic will be discussed in a meeting to be held by the Nautical Committee before the end of this month.
The current administration, 2021-2023, of the Nautical Committee of Chuburná began its duties on July 26 of last year at the Casa del Pueblo on 12th Street. Daniel Poot Chan was chosen at that time as their new representative in a ceremony attended by municipal and maritime authorities. The rest of the committee consists of Luis Román Castro Tzab as secretary, Samuel Feliciano Caamal Sulub as treasurer, Ignacio Recio Ramayo as head of the Surveillance Council, and William Tzab Sosa as a member.
Currently, the pier and especially Swing Island have become points of attraction for tourists who increasingly arrive in larger numbers, engaging in activities such as recreational fishing boat tours or having bonfires under the moonlight, with prices reaching up to 3,800 pesos.
There are various tourist attractions at the pier, as well as different prices for the services offered, although the most common is to take visitors on a boat tour through a spring, a salt farm, and Swing Island, where tourists can relax in palapas with various facilities, including hammocks.
Based on the latest registry released by the Municipal Fisheries Department, Chuburná is home to 550 seafaring men, although with the new generation of young people dedicated to this work in the past two years, those interviewed agreed that the number could reach up to 700 people engaged in offshore activities, alternating with tourism.
