Damage to mangroves continues uncontrolled in Yucatán

In view of the deterioration of the mangrove areas in Progreso and its coastal communities, authorities are seeking to develop plans and strategies in favor of the conservation of these spaces, which look each time with greater and lesser quantity of vegetal specimens, mainly due to the advance of constructions, the immoderate logging and the dumping of liquid and solid pollutants in the place.

As an example of the terrible conditions of the mangrove in the port, to the naked eye, the foliage of the inhabited areas bordering the swamp has been strongly reduced in the last years, due to the insatiable need of the inhabitants of Progreso and its commissaries to obtain land at no cost, to build their houses.

According to the head of Zofemat, Ali Dib Muñoz, in recent years logging and destruction of vegetation has been carried out, eliminating countless local wildlife species, including the protected mangrove, while at the same time, in order to avoid being caught in the logging, the wetlands have been filled in to gain ground in the swamp, at the cost of destroying the ecosystems.

Dib Muñoz pointed out that, in conjunction with these acts, pollution from dumping garbage and toxic waste, has contributed to sterilizing the area, killing plants and animals incalculably, and diminishing the population of the entire ecosystem.

Currently, the more than 10 km of the inhabited area of Progreso, Chicxulub, and Chelem, as far as the swamp is concerned, has suffered about 80% damage to all of its wild vegetation, compared to more than 10 years ago.
