MEXICO CITY, May 7.- More than one hundred caves and cenotes are found along the route of Section 5 of the Maya Train, which is being built by the Mexican Army. The cave called “Dama Blanca”, a unique ecosystem in Mexico, is one of these and its entrance was almost completely covered with stones and earth.
Environmental groups claim that the damage is irreversible. The devastation of the habitat of countless animals, insects, and plants, including archaeological remains, is a fact.
A few days ago, the Dama Blanca -whose name comes from the albino fish that inhabits it, a species unique to the Yucatan Peninsula- began to be damaged. Part of the entrance was filled in as preparation for the base of the piles that will support the elevated train viaduct, one of the priority works of the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
