After the scandal over the alleged purchase of a luxury apartment by General Luis Cresencio Sandoval, Secretary of Defense, President López Obrador came to his defense this Thursday, May 18th.
“The general, among other characteristics, among other virtues, is an honest, incorruptible people, but our adversaries will not accept that,” he declared.
According to the investigation by Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity (MCCI), the military would have acquired the property at a third of its value from an Army supplier.
Sandoval admitted the purchase, but argued that he could afford it because it was in “grey work and without finishes”, and it was through a loan that he requested from Banjército.
As for the seller, he said that he did not know the identity until the deeds were signed and that this did not influence his contract with the Army, “almost two years after I acquired the apartment.”
