The incident occurred in the waters of Playa Norte, and immediately, other nearby boats assisted in the rescue efforts.

Vacationers in Isla Mujeres (Quintana Roo), one of the most important beach destinations in Mexico, got a scare this Thursday when they witnessed how a yacht with 15 people on board sank.

The moment was captured and broadcast on networks by TikTok user guga_mty, who detailed that the incident occurred around 17:00 hours in the turquoise waters of Playa Norte, where it is common for small boats to get stranded near the coast, so that their crew members can take a dip due to the shallow depth.

“But why! Oh my god, it’s sinking!” one woman is heard say.

Thanks to the Port Captaincy and other nearby vessels, they were able to tie it by the bow and tow it to a dock on the island, where it remained under shelter, while the tourists received medical attention.

Around 7:00 p.m., local media reported that the name of the yacht is Sea Rey, which is 11 meters long and had 12 crew members and 13 passengers on board, all of whom were found to be safe and sound.

According to the first reports, the boat was coming from Cancun, but on the way it began to present failures that caused it to capsize near Playa Norte.

The Mayor’s Office of Isla Mujeres, in charge of Atenea Gómez, assured that they immediately went to the place to supervise the rescue maneuvers, so it never represented any risk for the other vacationers, since, they explained, there is a delimitation with buoys so that the boats do not approach the area where the visitors swim.

According to the company Catamaran Experience Cancun, rentals of this type of boats in Isla Mujeres range from USD 1,200 to 1,500 (up to 27,300 pesos), depending on whether it is for four or seven hours.

Last weekend, which kicked off the Holy Week vacation, hotel occupancy on the island was 85.52 percent and in the Continental Zone of Isla Mujeres it was 89.31 percent, according to a report by the Isla Mujeres Economic Development and Tourism Department.

This islet located just 13 kilometers off the coast of Cancun was a divine place for the Mayas, who considered it gave off a strong energy and therefore consecrated it to the goddess Ixchel, goddess of the moon, love and fertility. The young Mayan girls made pilgrimages to this sanctuary on their passage from girl to woman, and left offerings of sculptures in the shape of women. That is why when the Spaniards arrived in 1517 and found so many figurines, they were surprised and decided to call it Isla Mujeres.

Today it belongs to the list of Mexico’s Magical Towns, a distinction for locations with a strong Mexican identity. Other famous towns are Valladolid and Izamal.

To get there from Puerto Juarez there are a couple of companies that make the round trip, Ultramar and Jetway (the latter a little cheaper). The trip takes only 20 minutes and there are almost constant departures.

Isla Mujeres is not too big, so a great option to get everywhere is by bicycle. There are several rental houses and the price is cheap.

The extensive North Beach is the most famous of Isla Mujeres, it is also an ideal place to enjoy a beautiful sunset. It is the most crowded and has the most facilities, but its kilometer of fine sand and shallow turquoise waters has many followers.
