Waverly Hills Sanatorium, located in Louisville, Kentucky, was once a bustling hospital for tuberculosis patients in the early 20th century. It is now known for its infamous “Death Tunnel,” a dark and eerie underground passage that was used to transport deceased patients out of the building.

During its operation from 1910 to 1961, Waverly Hills Sanatorium was home to thousands of patients suffering from tuberculosis, a deadly disease that claimed many lives during the early 1900s. The sanatorium was built on a hill to provide fresh air and a clean environment, which was believed to be crucial for the treatment of tuberculosis.

Despite its state-of-the-art facilities, the death rate at Waverly Hills was still high due to the severity of the disease. As a result, a five-story tunnel was constructed to transport the deceased patients out of the building without alarming the living patients. The tunnel was also used to bring in supplies and to allow staff to enter and exit the building without disturbing the patients.

The Death Tunnel, as it is now known, is a dark and narrow passageway that stretches for approximately 500 feet. It has a sharp decline and was built at a 45-degree angle to allow for the easy transport of gurneys carrying the bodies of deceased patients. The tunnel was also equipped with rails to allow for a faster and smoother transport of the bodies.

The Death Tunnel is now a popular destination for ghost hunters and paranormal enthusiasts. Many believe that the spirits of the deceased patients still haunt the tunnel and the rest of the sanatorium. Visitors have reported hearing strange noises, feeling cold spots, and seeing ghostly apparitions. Some have even claimed to have been touched or pushed by unseen entities.

Despite its dark history, Waverly Hills Sanatorium has now been renovated and turned into a tourist attraction. Visitors can take a guided tour of the sanatorium, including the Death Tunnel, and learn about the history of tuberculosis and the medical practices of the early 1900s. The site also hosts haunted house events during Halloween season.

The Death Tunnel of Waverly Hills Sanatorium is a haunting reminder of the devastating toll of tuberculosis during the early 20th century. While it may be a popular destination for ghost hunters and thrill-seekers, it is also a sobering reminder of the lives lost to this deadly disease.
