Claudia Sheinbaum, Head of Government of Mexico City, denied that the fire that consumed the area of empty containers at the Central de Abastos this Thursday was due to extortion.

“There is currently no report of extortion at the Central de Abasto, anyway, we will investigate to see if there is any kind of crime,” she declared.

The official supervised the area that burned for almost six hours and razed about 356 small businesses where tons of wood, crates, and cardboard were stored.

Marcela Villegas, director of the Central de Abasto, announced that the merchants who lost their premises will be relocated so as not to lose working days.

During the fire, two firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation, and four people who had a nervous breakdown were also assisted. Additionally, a cat that was trapped was rescued.
