The Municipality of Mérida, headed by Renán Barrera Concha, is complicit in the ecocide being carried out in the town of Sierra Papacal, north of the Yucatan capital, as organizers of the traditional festival in the area have cut down trees to build a bullring.
But the crime did not stop there. Although the Municipality has boasted, through its Director of Governance, Ignacio Gutiérrez Solís, that they have eradicated the so-called “Lasso” tournaments in the towns, the reality is different.
During the weekend, this activity was carried out in Sierra Papacal, in the wooden bullring. This situation also shows that the treatment in the towns is not equal, as while some events are canceled and left in complete abandonment in some towns, bullfights are allowed to take place in others, putting the safety of animals and attendees at risk.
The commissioner, Alan Herrera Pool, downplayed the impact of the tree felling, which was reported by several residents who protested that the low deciduous forest area was being attacked and the palqueros were being favored by the construction of the bullring.
Herrera Pool stated that the logs and other woods came from a place where they have always been cut down without harm. “It’s the same people who cut firewood and they already know where to go,” he said.
