Mayor Renan Barrera Concha informed that Merida was one of the five cities selected to participate in the next few days in the Cities of the Americas Summit, to be held in Denver, Colorado, where they will present the progress made in terms of environmental care, promotion of the use of clean energy and combating climate change.
The Mayor informed that the U.S. Embassy in Mexico invited only four Mexican cities to participate in this forum that brings together the main leaders of the continent, so that Merida, Monterrey, Hermosillo and Mexico City, cities that are members of the Alliance for Zero Emission Cities, can present the progress made to consolidate public policies aimed at making municipalities more sustainable and sustainable.
“That Merida will be considered among the four cities that will attend the Cities of the Americas Summit, to be held in Denver, Colorado, is great news, because only four municipalities in Mexico were chosen by the U.S. Government. In addition, this invitation includes the travel and accommodation expenses for the forum,” he said.
He recalled that the Summit of Cities of the Americas, whose general theme this year is “Global Challenges, Local Solutions”, to be held in Denver from April 26 to 28, will bring together 150 mayors from different regions of the Americas, as well as businessmen, teachers, young people and representatives of civil society and indigenous communities, to present the different perspectives and viewpoints on the issues to be addressed.
He pointed out that the general plenary sessions with all attendees, thematic sessions and round tables will have among their topics to be addressed: climate change, migratory flows, digital transformation, food security, sustainable mobility and transportation, migration, housing, finance, competitiveness and investment.
In the work agenda of the Cities of the Americas Summit, Barrera Concha will attend the National Renewable Energy Laboratory on April 26; hold a meeting with the United States Ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, where mayors from Mexico, the United States and Canada will attend on April 27; participate on April 28 in a round table on how to fight corruption and promote transparency.
Likewise, in the activities programmed by ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability), the Municipal President of Merida will participate in the follow-up session on climate and environment, urban development and circular economy: an inspiring approach to start.
