Progreso beach front homes at risk of collapse

The effects of climate change are becoming increasingly evident, as the sea in Progresso has swallowed up the beach and homes located along the coast are at risk of collapse.

This phenomenon was evident and dozens of visitors noticed during Easter vacation, as about 200 meters of beach has disappeared on the east side of the boardwalk.

This area is located between the ‘Orcas’ and ‘Pluma y Lápiz’ condominiums, where marine erosion is increasingly evident and affecting the coastal fishermen who have had to migrate to other beaches to protect their boats.

Regarding this issue, a fisherman said that practically “the sea collects damages caused to it by invading its territory.

While erosion was evident in the Chelem community, unfortunately from 50th to 54th street, the erosion is uncontrollable despite the installation of geotubes.

Some visitors were surprised, as just a few months ago there was a beach to walk on, however, the sea practically collides with the walls of the homes that were on the edge of the beach.

It should be noted that the owners of these homes have expressed concern about the damage the sea could cause to their assets, so they have placed groins; however, favorable results have not been seen so far.
