In Progreso, a fire that caused terror in the western part of the city had to be extinguished with buckets by firefighters, ecological police, and elements of the DSPT.
The fire broke out in the evening hours when residents of 29th Street at 108 in the “Juan Montalvo” neighborhood spotted a large smoke coming from a vacant lot where there was grass, garbage, construction material, and even animals in a state of decomposition.
Since the fire was less than thirty meters away from a gas station, an operation was launched, involving units of the DSPT, ecological police, and even tourist police, in addition to a fire truck from the SSP.
Despite the fact that the fire was spreading rapidly, officers had no choice but to close access to this street from 29th Street and, lacking tools, requested water pumping from a private home to eradicate the problem.
It took more than five officers from different agencies almost an hour to extinguish the fire, with the violent gusts of wind as a contributing factor. Despite positive comments about the officers’ tireless intervention, it was also expressed that the authorities work in vulnerable conditions. For example, this incident required the use of buckets and plastic bottles to put out the fire.
The cause of the fire is unknown, although prior to the uncontrolled fire, a couple of people were seen smoking on the sidewalk, so a cigarette butt could have been the trigger for the whole grass to catch fire.
