Obesity continues to be a serious health problem in Yucatán

MÉRIDA, Yucatan, April 14, 2023.- Although Yucatan went from first to fourth place nationally in cases of obesity, this does not mean that the number of patients with this chronic disease is decreasing, this was revealed by Deysi Zenteno, lead surgeon of the Bariatric Clinic of the Hospital Regional de Alta Especialidad de la Peninsula de Yucatan.

“It is not a good thing, because we have not eradicated obesity, it is not that we have dropped from number one to number four because we have worked on reducing obesity, but rather that in other states their population has increased with their obesity,” commented the interviewee, who said that this condition is a serious health problem in the state.

She pointed out that only one third of the population has a normal weight, that is to say, 75 percent of the people are overweight, a problem that is worsened because people are not aware and normalize gaining weight and height because at the beginning there are no symptoms that force people to consult a medical specialist.

“Many people are unaware that they are living with a problem, every time it is normalized to have excess weight and as this is a problem that at the beginning does not give symptoms that consider that it is serious, it starts to normalize, but when it manifests itself it is with diabetes”, said Deysi Zenteno, who added that morbid obesity is a serious problem.

She explained that morbid obesity is when the patient has a body mass index above 40 “and it is called morbid because it affects mobility, breathing, people are limited in their daily activities” and that is what she perceives, since many things happen inside the body that could cause a heart attack.
