The ” Viernes Santo Santo” (Good Friday) granted the port of Progreso a record attendance of more than one hundred thousand people between national and foreign tourists, being this mark something that was not achieved since the “Semana Mayor” of 2019, the year prior to the entry of the pandemic by COVID-19 in the first quarter of 2020.
The average entry by automobiles and means of transportation surprised the authorities since it was calculated in a “rush hour”, from nine in the morning to one in the afternoon, up to sixty units per minute, being this a record figure.
The vehicular chaos, although controlled in the first square of the municipal capital, was inevitable on the highways leading to Chelem, Chicxulub and the “dunes” of Chuburna Puerto, where thousands of visitors took advantage of the beaches of these commissaries.
At eleven o’clock in the morning, service providers and workers of the gastronomic establishments in the first part of the city had already registered a full house inside and outside the beach, to the extent that there were restaurants with lines of up to thirty people waiting for tables to taste dishes made with seafood products.
Something that some “palaperos” regretted is that most of the families who only opted to buy the spaces, had already brought drinks and bought fried fish in the shops near this tourist extension.
As for the profits generated, an approximate 40% increase continues to rise, which several waiters are receiving based on the tips for the increase of diners per season within their earnings.
Organizations such as the National Chamber of Commerce based in this port, headed by Manuel Contreras Alcalá, assured that this holiday period will serve workers and businessmen to have a basis of support to boost their economy after Carnival, when they obtained an exponential monetary start.
Something that was noticed throughout this Friday was the increase of SSP elements inside and outside the coastal area, apart from patrolling by the Mexican Navy through a “Defender” type unit. Only on the traditional boardwalk, next to the statue of Juan Miguel Castro, were two ambulances stationed.
