The most sought-after Olmec piece in Mexico has been recovered and is in the process of being returned to the country, as announced by the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard.
The Mexican chancellor reported through his social media that the Consul of New York, Jorge Islas, confirmed that this historical piece has been recovered and will be returned to the place from where it should never have been stolen.
“Our Consul Jorge Islas confirms to me from New York that the most sought-after Olmec piece by Mexico has been recovered and is about to return to its home, from where it should never have been stolen,” Ebrard reported.
Neither Marcelo Ebrard nor the Ministry of Culture have provided more details regarding where this historical piece was located.
It should be noted that a few days ago, the Ministry of Culture made a call during a morning conference at the National Palace to suspend an auction of 83 archaeological pieces in Paris, France.
The head of that department, Alejandra Frausto, explained that the pieces, with an estimated value of 13.5 million pesos, belong to the Olmec and Tlatilco cultures.
“We make an energetic call for this auction to be stopped, so that potential buyers can focus on the art of current peoples,” she declared during the conference.
The official emphasized that this type of auction is illegal and, moreover, offensive to Mexico.
