The arrival of a locomotive to the Yucatecan Sultana de Oriente caused great expectations among the population of this city. According to the information gathered, the locomotive will be used as a loading service for the transfer of stone material and the laying of the railroad tracks of the Tren Maya.

As part of the maneuvers for its arrival, workers of the Tren Maya first momentarily closed the Valladolid-Izamal highway, specifically on the Valladolid-Temozón road section, to guarantee the movements for the arrival of the locomotive coming from Tulum, Quintana Roo.

The people who observed the operation thought that it was the first engine of the Mayan Train which, according to what was announced, is intended to start test operations as soon as the work on the railroad tracks is completed.

However, personnel responsible for these works clarified that the locomotive is part of the important tools to speed up the works of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s flagship project. The locomotive is a freight locomotive and will be used to transport heavy material and track bedding to expedite the work on the Tren Maya, they explained.

It was also reported that the train arrived in eastern Yucatan after passing through the neighboring state of Quintana Roo and that it came from San Luis Potosi, from where it departed a few days ago to join the work on this project.

The workers of the Mayan Train pointed out that it is a very heavy piece of machinery, weighing approximately 150 tons, and will be in Quintana Roo and the eastern part of Yucatan for two and a half months.

The locomotive will be used in section four of the Tren Maya, which goes from Izamal to Cancun, where 200 kilometers of double electrified tracks have been installed to date, out of a total of 239 kilometers contemplated, which will cover nine municipalities and 17 localities.

Likewise, this section of the Mayan Train will have three stations in Chichén Itzá, Valladolid and Cancún Airport, as well as two stops called Nueva Xcán and Leona Vicario.

Currently, 62 thousand jobs have been generated with the construction of 125 pedestrian, vehicular and fauna crossings, as well as 23 transversal drainage works. As for the inputs required for the supply of rail, these are at 100 percent, while the manufacture of sleepers and ballast is progressing.

It is worth mentioning that vehicular circulation on this track was reopened again after the maneuvers with the locomotive were concluded after its arrival in Valladolid.
